that the motor was a Mitsubishi Design.
I SAID that the balance shaft technology was licensed from Mitsubishi.
Some (more) genealogy, since what I originally posted wasn't sufficient:
The 2.0 that was in the 99 and 900 WAS originally used in the 9000.
This block is a SLANT-4, i.e. half of a V-8. This was called the B202 in two liter 16v form.
The 2.3 in the 9000 was a DIFFERENT BLOCK that can not be fitted into a classic 900. This was called the B234 in 2.3 liter 16v balance shaft design. BTW - the 2.0 and 2.3 have the same bore diameter.
AFTER the 2.3 came out, Saab also de-stroked it to 2.0 liters (the better to sell them in Europe. This was initially called the B204. This block STILL can not go into a Classic 900.
The "4" means how many shafts the motor has, in Saab's case, counting the balance shafts and the cam shafts. This "system" breaks down once the B235 comes out...
This block, the B234
