I'm at a bit of a dilemma. I recently planted a row of 5'-6' blue and white spruce trees from a nursery with root balls. I feel ive followed the proper planting procedures and watered correctly etc. They have been slow to show signs of significant growth and ive already replaced two for what I believe was pine borer beetle/nemetode infestation. They are reasonably healthy but I would like to do all I can to help them. Websearches are mixed as to fertilizing or not to fertilize. I have also, upon cleaning out my dads garage, a stock of gallon jugs of Ortho evergreen fertilizer. This is 30 years old! Chemically would this be stable/useable after all this time? I was thinking of testing it on one tree to see. Planting trees of this size ( about 500lbs each ) is hard work plus the cost of course. It sure seems like when you see them planted at a new bank or office building no one takes care of them and they thrive anyway. Anyone have advice on planting/caring ? thanks much.
