Or has done lots for you in the past, or is physically challanged, or can't afford to pay someone to do the work... many of those type of things and all valid good reasons to do it...
However, you do know that once you *do* the work you own any future issues... So if you really don't see the upside in doing this, and he doesn't qualify for any of the right reasons for you driving 5 hours plus time there plus all the other points you made... Consider getting out of it.
Good and reasonable outs could be:
My back has been bothering me and I can't afford to miss work, what will all of the layoffs and all, how much did they say to do it?
I have't done one of these ever/in a long time.
The warranty issue if it's done and has problems, those guys are closer and you wouldn't have to wait 3hours plus when I can come if problems.
Schedule conflict, love to help but work/family/etc plans.
any of those should get the message to him that it's to *his* benefit to pay the local guy.
remember that it's a win for you to get him to do the right thing.
