So, under the Cash for Clunkers scheme, the Feds subsidize the purchase of new cars to the tune of either $3500 or $4500 as long as they get 5 or 10 mpg more than the 'clunker' turned in and we're now suddenly preferring smaller vehicles? Doubtful.
Turn the program around and have the Feds subsidize larger vehicle purchases for safety reasons (for example) to the same dollar amounts and pick ups / SUVs would b flying off the lots.
I buy smaller cars with 4-cylinder engines like Saabs for the safety and fuel efficiency and I'm essentially penalized now for doing so. Or at least I'm subsidizing those who never cared about such things. Wish I had a $4500 tax refund on the fuel taxes I've paid over the years. I could do a lot with that. In the meantime, I'm just waiting for my taxes to go up to pay for schemes such as 'Cash for Clunkers.'
