Not bragging, but in the past year, used my CC's twice in France, once each in Deutschland, Switzerland, U.A.E., India, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Austria, Canada, Mexico, Brazil, and Russia. Point is, I can compare how things work under difference laws, systems, and even continents.
It's not a trend. Banks have been charging a foreign transaction fee on CC's for years. What's worse is when you us your CC to get cash at an ATM. You can get hit twice. I had to do this to pay a traffic fine on the spot in Praha. Debit card was with SO at the hotel.
Anyway they can charge you, they will charge you. Then, there is a mark-up on converting currencies.
