The $5000 without charges seems to be Standard Operating Practice in many businesses, despite what the card issuers have in their agreements. This is what we have done in the past, and it seems to be fairly well accepted, but I really don't want to scare away any potential business. I like the idea of keeping "waiver of the surcharge" available to use as a "closer", great tip!

Interestingly enough, we had a charge dispute (poor quality installation by a subcontractor, which we redid at considerable cost to us) on a transaction with a surcharge fee on it; I had to send in copies of the invoices, and the credit card issuer didn't say anything about the surcharge. That may have been a fluke or they overlooked it in light of resolving the other issue.

Most of our material needs to be special ordered, so we have some time to know if checks are going to bounce - provides some level of protection.
