I'm with Noel on this one. My daughter has bailed out of several instruments before she decided that she likes playing clarinet. She's now playing in several bands at school, which includes getting there at 7:15am for practice twice a week, and she really enjoys it, goes to practice on her own volition (a major step). If I had purchased a new flute (her last interest) I would be quite POed about the change. The point of this: kids' interest can change, don't make an investment of several thousand dollars in an instrument up front.
The music school where I have taken jazz guitar lessons (Bossa Nova and Samba!) has a fleet of Yamaha electronic console pianos. These are great instruments for early learning and durable enough for institutional use, as they get carried around to various practice rooms, etc. Perhaps you can find a place to rent one of these for a while, or perhaps you could find a used one.
