The new American and European uprights are out there, but none of them cost $5500. You may be able to find a nice used American or Japanese one for that sort of money or less, though it is always wise to hire an independent piano technician to inspect it before purchase (to be sure it's not a clunker).
The Kawai K3 is a nice instrument; the company has a solid reputation and the action technology is really advanced. The warranty is transferrable, which is unusual in the industry. You should also shop the equivalent Yamaha U1 or T121 as a competitor. Cunningham in Philly has a good reputation, but I don't know what brands they carry right now.
Larry Fine's "The Piano Book" and the most recent pricing supplement are a good comprehensive guide to the industry, what to pay, what to expect, etc. An update to the pricing supplement is about to be released (good to have fresh data), so make sure you get the right one!
I have a Schimmel 130T as my personal upright piano-- it's really nice, but costs a lot more than many baby grands... If you're looking for more information, you may try looking for the piano world forum, BUT let me warn you that it can be hard to separate good information from sales spin from people who "root" for the brand of piano they own, etc. The forum is very active and you will likely get a lot of responses...
