Piano buying advice

We have been looking for an upright piano. Our daughter is starting her piano lessons in the fall.
We don't mind paying money for good quality and value. We want the piano to look good in our living room. We want it to sound good, obviously. We really don't want to buy a "starter" piano now and upgrade later -- would like the piano to be durable and last us a lifetime.
We have been shopping around quite a bit for about two months. It is amazing, but there are seriously slim pickings around our area (Philly). Every piano salesman pushes Chinese made piano as if their life depends on it. It is really quite disturbing to see them use every possible trick to make you buy a Chinese piano. We are not talking friendly advice here or even gentle persuasion. We are talking full frontal assault, full force. It is really obvious that all of the salespeople have something big at stake in trying to steer you to Chinese product. I wonder if they get serious bonus money from the Chinese for this...
Anyway, we are not caving so far. But the thing is, our choices are extremely limited when we eliminate Chinese made pianos from the list. Yamaha (one or two models still made in Japan) and Kawai -- that's it. Where are the American made brands? Where are the Germans? I would rather buy a Ukrainian made piano than a Chinese one. But none are for sale. We have seen a few Baldwins but that's about it.
Also, how much can we negotiate on the price? Does anyone know if we should be able to get the price down from what dealers are asking? At this point we have our minds set on Kawai K-3. All dealers so far have similar pricing on this model -- around $5500 for gloss black and about $300 more for polished mahogany. What would be a fair offer to make on this model?
