You can help also..
I've got going through the TSA gauntlet to the minimum amount of time. Before entering the line I put my wallet, my cell phone, my watch and any coins in my pocket inside my carry on bag so I do not have to waste anytime getting them out of the pocket into a container. I never remove my belt. From experience my belt never triggers the alarm. Appoaching the conveyor belt I take my laptop out and remove my shoes and dump them into separate trays. After seeing the last item of my carry on stuff into the x-ray machine I have only my boarding pass and my passport ready to go through the check point. After passing the check point I grab all of my stuff from the belt coming out of the x-ray and walk to the sitting area nearby to regroup so to not obstruct traffic.
This is SOP in any US controlled check point. International is similar but some are more relaxed. I never veer from the routine. Some international check points allow your laptop to stay in the bag. Some others allow your shoes to stay on you feet.
Of course I can say I am a seasoned traveler. Not everyone does so.
