The serpentine and A/C belts on my '87 9000S is in need of replacement, which requires a 10mm, a 13mm and 17mm wrench. Since relocating from NY to Texas, I no longer have access to my dad's tool collection. I much prefer a bargain over full price (all of my cars have been bought used). After checking out several pawn shops I found one that carried a good selection of quality wrenches. There are no sets, just loose wrenches. All of the craftsman and other American made wrenches were in a separate bin from the Chinese made stuff. Most of the wrenches were SAE, but there were a few metric hidden in the mix.
After a good 20 minutes of scavenging I was able to put together nearly a full set of combination wrenches (8-19mm, no 10mm, and 2 beat up Husky wrenches). I also found some open end wrenches, a deep offset 13/15 mm, and a 13 mm ratcheting wrench.
When I brought the collection to the counter the first gent quoted $30. I said deal, and then went back and found a cheap Chinese 10mm because I needed it. When I went back to the counter, the head manager adjusted the price to $40. I was not happy about this. I then removed the wrenches I know I would not use (18mm, 16mm, and a few others). The guy then adjusted the price per wrench from $2.25 to $3. After a bit of discussion I left with no wrenches.
I ended up buying a set of 11 Husky wrenches for $20 (worth about $25). I now wish I had spent the extra $20 and gotten the damn 17 craftsman wrenches(worth about $80).
In my defense I will add that I am currently unemployed (the wife is the sole bread winner at the moment).
