This is a very complicated subject that depends very much on road conditions and congestion. Tom Vanderbilt addresses it in his book Traffic, and mentions it on his blog, linked. if you Google "late merging" you get a host of discussions.
Some areas instruct you to merge early, or late. I follow the regional variations. Around Chicago, it's usually unmarked and ambiguous, so my personal belief is that I should merge in the way that least disrupts the overall flow of traffic. Most times it's an early merge. I lat emerge if there is crawling traffic and the obstruction is not the merge zone (hard to tell, and my psychic powers are shady). I always early merge out of exit-only and right-only lanes, though. People exiting should be allowed to exit and let the congestion unclog.
Also, http://trafficwaves.org/ (and getting a manual transmission car) has changed my driving significantly for the better.
