Saab got the V4 from Ford, and the original L4 from Ricardo. It really wasn't until the early '80s that Saab had their "own" motor.
Personally, I don't see reliance on 3rd parties for most drivetrain parts as a downside. I'd be perfectly happy to see Saab buy Ecotecs from GM or Duratecs from Ford, transmissions from Aisin, brake systems from Bosch or ATE, etc. as long as they're the ones building the interiors and the bodies. I've never really considered my Saabs to be defined by the mechanicals, but moreso the superb driving dynamics and happy mix of performance & practicality. There are plenty (MOSTLY) good mechanical bits out there to pick from - I see no reason why Saab is less of a desirable car for not fielding their own entries. Maybe Saab could be that company to put VAG's awesome direct-injected turbo four or Honda's terrific FWD 6-speed transmission into a car I actually car about. That'd be nice.
