Well heres a rundown of who makes what --
These are the big 5
Bosch, Siemens -- also Thermador, etc and other high end brands
Frigidaire, Electrolux
General Electric
Whirlpool also Kitchenaid, Maytag, Amana, Whirlpool, Jennair
Kenmore -- all of the above plus LG, Samsung -- all Kenmores are rebadges, they don't make anything
Samsung, LG are up and coming... DCS/Fisher Paykel, VIking, Wolf, Subzero, Monogram, Dacor, etc are all high end.
Personally I think Maytag (the Maytag of the last 10 years or so) -- is absolute junk Maytag was struggling greatly -- and really produced lousy stuff. Whirlpool now owns Maytag and is revamping everything, because it needed it.
Bosch dishwashers are very good, but small, Euro sized interiors -- not so great for most larger US families. Their refrigerators are rebadged as are stoves -- so the verdict is out.
spend some time at the Gardenweb appliance forums -- http://ths.gardenweb.com/forums/appl/
Buy the brands you see your neighbors have -- but there is absolutely no reason that all the appliances need to be the same brand. Buy the best dishwasher for you, the best stove, etc -- no single appliance manufacturer makes the best of everything!
And really shop around. I remodeled my kitchen 2 years ago -- but kept the existing fridge since it was OK. Today it broke down -- for the same model Kitchenaid I found prices of $2900 (highest was Home Depot), to $2150 (a local independent distributor).
Have fun and enjoy your new kitchem!
