Most of the reviews and comparison tests I have read conclude that the T1I is a little bit better, usually because of its superior low light performance and lower noise levels.
I am about to replace my original Digital Rebel with the fifth generation T1i mostly for those reasons and also because the current models have been greatly fine-tuned over my first generation one in terms of programming, displays and other less important things.
Both Canon and Nikon are top quality. My choice of Canon was because my older lenses and speedlight work with the Rebels.
If you don't care about video you might consider saving a few dollars by getting a Rebel XTi instead. Aside from the video you would also be getting a previous generation image processor (the heart of the camera) and losing some low-light capability, but it still is a good beginner-to-intermediate camera.
The 18-55mm image stabilized lens that comes with the kit is surprisingly good. It rotates as it focusses, which makes it difficult to use polarizing filters, but otherwise gives very good results.
I also have an 18-200 mm Sigma lens that is a bit heavy, but is great for being able to travel with just one lens. A high quality optic at a reasonable price.
