There are about half a dozen people around me who store cars for the winter in a "car coat." They seem to come out okay in the Spring.
However -- these aren't cars that owners are trying to keep in showroom shape. I think they're choosing not to prematurely age them and extend their useful life by not subjecting them to New England winters. Damage done by wind action of the car coat is prolly a "lesser of two evils" in these cases.
I've heard rodent repellent is essential l for stored cars.
Other alternatives -- I've heard some airports let people store boats and cars in large buildings usually used for snow removal equipment.
