I think a lot of us, definitely placing myself in this group, see these lists that contain a vehicle we may have lusted over at a different time in our lives (like the '87 GNX) and temporarily forget the realities. The realities of keeping a high performance or high technology car driveable for everyday use.
That GNX was 22 year old and represented the "state-of-the-art" for performance turbo-charging in a quasi street car at that time, meaning the engine was stressed to the maximum the engineers thought would last through the warranty period.
After 22 years of being abused as a street racer, the sole reason for GNX creation, the car was probably worn out and trashed. If this GNX had been owned by someone who valued the pedigree of this car they would never have traded it to the scrap heap.
Reduced national fuel consumption, reduced vehicle emissions, improved occupant safety, keeping citizens working, these were the goals of the "Cash for Clunkers" program. Whether it was worth the cost is a political debate that isn't appropriate here.
