Average MPG of clunkers - 15.8
Avergae MPG of new cars - 24.9

Dealers were helped considerbly--at the end of the program Chryler was down to a 28 day supply of inventory, 60 days is normal.
Pumping $2.878 billion into the economy couldn't have been a bad thing--what exactly are the ideas the naysayers have for turning the economy around?
If the average deal was someone trading in a clapped out Explorer on a new Corolla these were people who needed a new car and probably couldn't have afforded one otherwise. Putting someone like that into a new, reliable, economical car seems like a good thing to me. I suspect the vast majority of the cars truly were clunkers. I don't know that anyone could have antisipated a small handfull of people would have been daft enough to trade in cars as nice as the ones shown in the videos. If they could have made a provision to resell cars meeting certain standards in terms of condition (say dirt cheap to someone who could demonstrate they were out of work)it would have been a much better program.
