First off, that article is not a valid test; it's merely the author's completely subjective impressions. More importantly, though, a tire that "all the ice racers use" may or may not be because it's the best tire; it may be that a local racing series requires a so-called "spec" tire -- that is, the rulebook mandates that every competitor must use the same brand/model. Or it could be the most durable. Or it could be that ice racers choose it because it performs best on the track surface (and temperature) conditions they usually run on. (For example, I have read about certain snow tires being unbeatable in ice racing but only when the temps are extremely cold.) But that doesn't necessarily confer superiority on other surface conditions.
The best snow tire data I've found comes from Swedish newspaper Aftenbladet, whose annual tests are done on multiple surfaces (snow, ice, wet and pavement, etc.), with multiple tests (acceleration, braking, handling, etc.). They also publish their data. Unfortunately, a lot of the tires they test don't make it to North America. It's also unfortunate that we don't get this type of testing rigor in the U.S. Tirerack claims, for example, that their data show that studded tires are inferior to today's best "friction" snows; however, Aftenbladet's conclusively demonstrates that this is not the case: studded tires perform appreciably better, to the extent that they are tested separately from studless.
