...the big thing with winter tires is how they wear - as they wear they lose their grip on ice. Will be interesting to hear how these perform a few years down the road.
Sounds like you're in Ontario, like us, so studs are out. That's where all the "new technology" comments come from because it is hard to make rubber hold on ice without studs. In general though, there are tradeoffs of deep snow performance vs ice performance + the Japanese brands are better at the latter, whereas the Finns are better at snow performance + use studs to get the ice performance (and in the end much better overall, except on dry roads). I care more about deep snow performance, so the Japanese tires don't do much for me. That said, I am interested in the tires with "grit" in the tire compound (where studs aren't allowed here). Are these that type?
fwiw, we're on Nokian Hakka 4's unstudded, and they're great (but even new, were not as great as the 15 year old studded Nokia Hakkas my parents had, both cars c900s)...
