I have been thinking a lot about this lately, particularly given the current situation with Saab. I bought my first Saab in 1973, a '70 model 99. The reasons? I am Swedish American (grandparents settled in Montana in the early 1900's) and I was so impressed with the "oddity" of these cars when I worked at a gas station in the late 60's - 4 on the column, front wheel drive, mixing oil with the gas. All of the other things I came to appreciate, free-wheel, key between the seats, GREAT handling etc. etc. I have had a string of used Saabs since (with one new one thrown in) mostly 900s, but a couple of 9000s and a couple of Sonnets. I have loved them all for their quirkiness, their difference from other cars, and their Swedishness. I am now in my 60's and I have 4, 2 900's, a 9000, and a 9-5. I am afraid that globalization has caught up to me. They are no longer really "Swedish" they are no longer as "quirky" and "different" from other cars. I will continue with the older ones, but why buy a newer one? My 9-5 is a great car, but not a whole lot different that any other car out there on the road; nothing really sets it apart. I will keep my older ones running, I will likely buy the next bargain Saab I spot, but the magic is really no longer there with the new ones. I hope I am proven wrong with the "new" K-saab.
