Saab; I like turbocharged power and fuel economy. I like the visibility and dash. I like the ruggedness and safety. I've been driving a ford escort wagon for comparison for a few days, and it's completely weak and crude compared to the Saab in many respects.
Jaguar; the X-type does not properly showcase the Jaguar brand despite the obligatory bling. It's a stepping stone into Jaguar for the aspiring. I test drove one and liked it except for it's particular auto transmission (it was available in manual too), but it doesnt have enough Jag DNA to represent the brand.
If you're shopping for a car, you can get a full sized jag for the same price as the X-type. So basically the only reasons to get an X-type might be for the AWD or manual transmission option.
I used to have an XJS and now have an E-type. All the popular Jaguars new and old have had a torquey engine (sometimes quite powerful), a refined suspension for handling at speed and a magical ride, nice leather and interior, distinctive body, most of the trappings of a nice touring car.
