You are correct about franchise law, which also varies by state as I recall. This was an issue during consolidation in the earthmoving and const equip industry a few years ago, and again with the GM and Chrysler dealer closings.
But the question remains: Why would Saab management want to terminate (or not renew) franchises in dealers with long histories and good sales, and which currently hold strategic geographical positions?
It can take months to get new dealers up and running and to build dealer loyalty.
If the franchise termination is maintained here in central IL, 100s of Saab owners will have lost a competent, honest dealer that offers excellent service and fair pricing. The only thing I can think of is some sales volume target that could arguably be better achieved by another dealer. Given the current local choices, I think that unlikely. Saab management, in my view, has shot itself in the foot -- and the rest of us in this area as well.
