Like James, I'm glad to hear you like your car. I will seek out the chance to drive newer Legacy/Outback/Something when I get a chance.
I drive a 9000 Aero, and my wife drives a '00 Outback wagon. I don't disagree that it's a fine car, and I love that it's great in the snow and I can take it more places than my Aero, but there's absolutely no comparing the two cars in terms of comfort, driving dynamics, noise levels, ergonomics, etc. I can't drive the Subie for more than an hour without my back giving me pain (I'm only 30, and I don't usually get bent out of shape while driving) compared to the multiple 10-14 hour drives in my 9000. (I've made similar drives in my brother's '97 900, my dad's '01 9-5, and my past BMWs.) I'm 5'11, and skinny.
I certainly hope that the new Subies are improvements, but there's really no comparing the two that I have. Subaru does a great job with their cars, but I think there is room for improvement in the ergonomics department.
Oh, an offering a potent (yet thirsty?) 6-cylinder in the newer Subarus without the option of a stick shift probably would take that option off the table for me anyway. I'd just buy a used Allroad. Those are comfortable cars.
Now, to arrange a long test drive in my aunt and uncles '06/'07 Outback...
