Typical problem with XWD. You can plow thru deep snow better, go uphill/downhill, etc.. but when it comes to safety issues such as stopping/sliding/avoidance, the extra weight of the XWD system (compared with the same car w/o XWD) puts the car at a disadvantage.
Solution - snow tires. They improve the drive/grip significantly. They too have a disadvantage in that they won't handle as well as your summer tires. Don't drive 70mph on snows.
If you own the car, snow tires are essentially free, as every mile on your snow tire is a mile less on your summer tire. Even if you are leasing, snows in the winter may be mean you drove the OEM tires just less enough that you won't have to replace them before you return the car. In any case, you already spent more $$ on the XWD system, may as well improve it with snows.
Strongly suggest Tire Rack. I have General Altimax Arctic which are reasonably priced and I like them a lot. I previously had Gislaved's on a 9-5 which I liked also, but the General's are a better deal.
