Well, what is good -- to whom and for what purpose? In the world of photography, refurbished (by the manufacturer) is usually as good or better than new in terms of reliability. If buying for yourself, that is win win. But, that is not your problem, or I think the cause of the question.
Your problem is, what will be the perception of the gift and the giver that will be perceived by the donee? Will the recipient feel that you did not think them worthy of new? Will you be thought of as cheap? The answers will be measured against the matrix of your relationship with the donee, how you spend on yourself, and the financial situation of the two of you.
I hope the donee recognizes that the refurbished stretched your finances to the limit and that new was beyond reasonable in your circumstances, perhaps beyond purchasing at all.
For me, I have spent more than I care to reveal on cameras and lenses since the DSLR revolution of the last few years. I have bought used a few times where the product, such as a Nikon teleconverter, has no moving parts. The more complicated something is, the more unlikely I am to get something used or refurbished. Cameras, BTW, much like computers, fall out of fashion or behind in technology, after not too many years. (Though, the curve is starting to flatten on image/ISO improvements this last year or two.) Good glass, though, is something to keep for many years, useful through several generations of cameras.
Happy Holidays!
