I'm a Dell certified tech working at a university and back in 2007-2008 Nvidia/Dell shipped thousands of laptops with faulty video GPUs. I replace 2-3 system boards a week on the Latitude D620-D630 models.
What happens is the processor fan gets clogged with dust/debris and causes the weakest link (GPU) to fail. Fortunately, we spec all of our systems with a 3-year warranty so we're covered.
My boss actually e-mailed Michael Dell about reversing the polarity on the processor fan to blow the dust out on startup. Within hours, a bunch of engineers got in touch and they worked through some stuff but ultimately decided that it wasn't worth the effort. Good luck.
