The December 2009 issue of Car and Driver has an absolutely superb article titled "Snow Shoes" in which they compare four categories of winter tires and quantify the performance differences in wet, dry and snow conditions. That article staes that winter tires comprise just 3% of the tire market in the US, and that even in the snowy regions of the US they account for less than 10% of the market. The article also states that an all-wheel drive vehicle with all-season tires can outaccelerate either a front or rear wheel drive vehicle on winter rubber, but that is where the advantage ends. the additional traction of winter tires allows a two wheel drive car to outbrake, outturn and generally outmaneuver its all-wheel drive bretheren.
