Agree with everyone's observations in this thread so far. Signals seem to be a rare novelty for other drivers. Aggressive and sloppy driving also seems to be the rule in our area more than ever (outside Hartford, CT). My wife and I both find it frustrating how few people signal but also how much tailgating and coming at us on the wrong side of the double yellow lines happens every day... and we notice people on cell phones often in the process of driving.

We have a hands free mobile phone law in CT (you are supposed to use a speaker phone or headset if talking and driving) but it seems we are about the only people we see avoiding using the phone while driving or using hands-free devices with the phones. And the law is not well enforced in general and I think everyone in the state knows it and takes their chances / doesn't really care.

An interesting observation we made over a holiday trip to Rhode Island (not known for having the best or safest drivers) was that people were more cautious, on their side of the double yellow lines, etc. compared with around here. A very strange experience but a nice treat.

I'd swear that the more dense the population (example New York or Boston) the more aggressive and dense the driving becomes!

I will add from another thread - I wish more people understood the importance of snow tires in places like here - we routinely pass stuck and wiped out 4 X 4 machines with our FWD Saabs and have NEVER been stuck in snow or had an accident with them in 23 years. I am guessing a law would end up being like the cell phone law - hard to enforce and ignored by most. We have convinced a few friends to get winter treads and they all said they don't know why they waited so many years.
