Molded piece of plastic on the end of the valve stem, inside the wheel. The stem is the broadcast antenna. The molded plastice has an IC, a pressure sensor of some sort, and battery, all embedded in the flat plastic matrix. Maybe, really rough since it was like six months ago, 1/4"x 3/4" x 1.5", for GM related products. Subaru, I believe, uses the same company's product that does GM. It is a throw away part. Size, shape and pressure setting vary by wheel shape and vehicle.
Was it 2008 where all vehicles were to have such a system? My 2008 9-3 has it. Fiance's 2008 Impreza had it, and I got to examine the part when she bent a wheel and had to have it replaced.
Larry is correct about the varying complexity and information reported by different configurations. My Saab reported the wheel location when it got cold north of Plattsburgh, and I had not topped off the pressure. They were down more than five pounds at that point.
Putting winter wheels on is irritating part for me. Only a TechII can turn off the system if you put on winter wheels and do not transfer the sensors from the summer wheels. Tirerack wants something like $300 to put them on four wheels -- waaay too much when they can be checked the old fashioned way almost for free.
Google something like "2008 Saab Tyre Pressure Monitoring System" and you will find good explanation of more than you want to know from another site.
I remember Googling the name of the part manufacture from the Subaru, and they must make them for half of the car producers in the world. I cannot remember now if it was Schrader or not. http://www.schrader-bridgeport.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=35&Itemid=108
In my Combi, rotating the tires did not cause any need for reprogramming as the system adjusted. Just had winter wheels put on two days ago, and have only driven a few miles, not far enough for error messages to pop up. I plan to have the system turned off until the summer wheels go back on in four months or so.
Query, if anyone knows, does the in-wheel part drain its battery really quickly if the air pressure goes below the set limit, such as if the tires are in storage or the driver just ignores the warning on the dash?
