Since the battery is embedded/potted/whatever, you have to replace the whole thing. Also, the replacements are kind of vehicle specific, so a sender from one vehicle won't necessarily work with a different vehicle. I think a 2008 Lotus and a 2008 Saab use the same one, for example, but others won't work (had the wrong part number installed).
Yes, it's not cheap to have a set of replacements installed on your snow tires. But then if you're spending $1200+ on a set of wheels and tires, for a $30 - 40,000+ sticker price car, the incremental cost is not so much, relatively. "Normal" people wouldn't even have a separate set of snow tires/wheels.
And yes, probably everyone on Saabnet knows they should check pressure with a gauge every day, but how many really do?
Once it's working, it's a system I'm happy with on my 2008.
