My local tire shop offered to install an aftermarket TPMS device (for the not inconsiderable sum of almost $300). It consisted of a reader strapped inside of each of the tires, around the wheel itself; I was kind of surprised at the large size of the senders, wondering if it would be crushed in a run flat situation).
There was a readout/cpu to process the signals that was to go on the dashboard, again, larger than I felt necessary.
I declined. I am a real geek about checking fluids & pressures at every fuel change, and I often drive 2500 or more miles every month. Tire pressure has a real impact on me, not only in fuel mileage, but safety, tire longevity, stress on other vehicle mechanicals, and dependability.
However, the implementation of most TPMS are far from ideal yet, and once that ideal is found, the price will come down & quality will go up.
As I see it, for the disciplined owner, the regular use of a quality tire pressure gauge is sufficient for the time being, based on the nominal cost and excellent results.
