Transverse engine vs. longitudinal, discounting dealers Posted by Bill Homer [Email] (#3427) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Bill Homer) on Sun, 3 Jan 2010 17:52:58 In Reply to: I did a waterpump on a Jetta vr6..., Brian, Sun, 3 Jan 2010 12:18:08 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Jettas have transverse (sideways) engines, A4s and Passats have longitudinal (along the length of the car) engines, useful for Quattro/4Motion transmissions. I'm surprised how hard it is to access the WP on a transverse engine; on my SAAB 9000, you remove the plastic wheel liner and it's almost sitting there.
The only real positive thing that I can say about the A4/Passat is that they are wonderful to drive. I just replaced all of the front control arms and upper rear bushings on my A4 and the car is like new, tight and fun to drive. Note that this is not a cheap process and will need to be done sometime in your GF's car's lifetime.
If you want to buy genuine VW trans fluid, see what it costs at some of the discounting dealers such as genuinevwparts.com or go on some of the forums and see what people are using. For my manual trans A4, I used Amsoil MTF. Wait until you see what VW power steering fluid costs (I used Redline instead).
