My parents heat with wood and like Rich, they tend to put a kettle on the stove. I have a "whole house" humidifier (Honeywell HMC-6011, ~$100) and it works well in the winter (gas forced-air heat) but I tend to have to fill it frequently. It's not the most convenient but works well enough.
You can have a true whole-house humidifier installed (or install it yourself) that uses your house ducting. I think you have to keep your furnace fan running all the time but that's not really a bad thing - it will keep your entire house a more consistent temperature. It will probably get costly; estimate $300-500 for the unit plus installation, and a new thermostat if your current one does not read humidity (it probably doesn't).
