The outside air temperature and the coldest surfaces in the house control the maximum humidity in the house. There are charts or tables showing the maximum indoor humidity versus outside temperature. Trying to raise the humidity in the house above the dew point of the coldest surface just causes more condensation in that surface. Usually the coldest surfaces are windows and doors. If your windows are already soaking wet, that is an indication you have reached the maximum humidity for the outside temperature and type of windows. What is really bad is the condensation you don't see, like in walls or ceilings where the insulation is compromised for one reason or another. In such cases excessive humidity can saturate insulation and drywall, and cause rotting and mold.
