General Motors plants within the company compete with each other to build motors, parts and cars. If you all take a look at the archives on this list, you will note that the next generation 9-3 was to be built by Open, in Germany, alongside Opels. Opel won a competition against Trollhattan. It was not exactly clear just what, if anything, would be built in Trollhattan when that occurred.
My current 2008 9-3 is derived from an Opel car. The engine was built by Opel in Germany as well, as well as Lord knows what else in the car. My last Saab 9-3, a 2001 was also an Opel derived chassis, and its engine was also build in Germany by Opel.
One car make a pretty good argument that Saab 9-3s have essentially been reworked Opels since the new generation 900 came out.
Wait, it's late, and I'm beginning to lose the point here. Sorry.
