Anders has said that reading the code is just the beginning of the troubleshooting effort. I don't think he was badmouthing any certain brand of reader, but just the fact that NO reader can just magically tell you to replace part #xyz.
I've got a real cheap HarborFreight code reader that won't even reset them (pull the battery cable instead). It displays the code number with absolutely no text. So I have to use the WIS to help figure stuff out; to me that's how it's supposed to work.
Then for more money you can get the type of scan-tool that can display real-time data while you drive. Those can really help figure stuff out, but not without some knowledge on the part of the mechanic.
