Oh yeah. OBD-II is a standard communication system on all cars built in or after 1996. You can read or clear any check engine light codes. Not really sure about the others like transmission or ABS, etc... Of course there are some Saab brand-specific codes. The reader will still give you the code but when the screen displays what the code pertains to or when you go back into the store to look it up it may not be an accurate description. A lot of us have WIS though which has a full list of all the codes a Saab could ever possibly spit out and someone I'm sure would be willing to help if you ever get a weirdo code. For the most part codes are usually random misfire (DI cassette) or something simple though.
What an OBD-II reader cannot do is change settings in the car's computer systems. That's why the $5000 Tech-II exists.
As for Advance vs. Zone, around here I cannot tell a difference. The one time I went to Advance looking to get a CEL read the girl behind the counter told he their "machine" had broken. I'm pretty sure she wasn't lying. At Zone they just gave me the reader and I could have driven off with it, haha. I also had Autozone test my battery and alternator with the big load tester. Boy, you could tell my poor little car was working really hard during that load test.
It has to be based on who is working. You probably just got a couple guys at Advance who are rubbed the wrong way by "Snaabs."
