Just because it picked something up prior to the Haiti earthquake does not mean that it picked up the precursors of the Haiti earthquake... it could have picked something else up... anywhere. Big planet, lots of seismic activity.
Not to say there should be no research, but while a lot of lives could be saved one day if we a lot of money were spent on such research, ... a lot more lives could be saved now if a lot of money were spent on building buildings that did not collapse in a big quake. Kinda like our Saabs... they might not survive a big accident to drive another day, but we will.
