Some are dim on start and then warm up to full brightness - but most newer ones are ok.

Some appear bluish - but most nowadays match incandescent color temperature very well.

Some start instanteniously but some with a 0.5-1 second delay.

A good advice is to find one on sale (like when they are $0.50/each at Costco), try it and if you like it buy as many as you would ever need.

About the mercury content - I have heard it is about 10 times lower now and keeps dropping. But of course people who bring this subject up usually are not interested in mentioning this fact. Kind of like the cellphones - with the switch to digital the emitted power went down by a factor of 10 (compated to analog). Noone was getting brain cancer then but for some reason it is an issue now.

BTW, by saving energy CFL pervent 3X more mercury from being released into the air at a coal-fired powerplant than actually contained in the bulb itself.
