a number of uses. I don't like the warm up time and I find to get the same amount of light as an incandescent I have to buy the next size up in CFL, especially for lights that are used for reading. So the savings isn't as great as one might expect. I find even the dimmable ones don't work as well as regular bulbs. For dimmable ceiling lights I find encapsulated halogens are better and use somewhat less energy than regular lights.
The disposal is annoying, too, although my town transfer station does have a separate spot for them. But it means it's something else to remember on the trip to the "dump."
Do they last longer? I find they MAY go 2x so the value is harder to measure. We're good about turning out lights that aren't in use, so I question the value of the things. And my wife hates the CFLs.
We're going back the other way.
