Under the category of more fun than work.
Can't answer about getting to the Saab museum/factory, but I'm sure there's local train/bus to Trollhatten and then taxi.
Driving in Sweden is not a problem at all (except for the speed traps), certainly on the E roads which run between the big cities you're interested in. Good signs, modern roads, safe. A lot of the fun stuff is on two lane, though, which are usually also good roads but can be interesting if you're directionally challenged. Gas was about $6.50 a gallon when we were last there in 2005, don't know about now but I suspect it's higher.
Train connections are pretty good. Stockholm - Goteborg about 3 hours, fast trains every hour, 1000 - 1200 SEK for second class depending on time of day (7.4 SEK = $1 right now); Goteborg - Copenhagen about 4 hours, a few fast trains every day plus a number of slower ones, 400 SEK; Copenhagen to Stockholm about 5 hours, trains every 2 hours (more frequently if you're willing to change once), 700 - 900 SEK. Weekends are higher. These are downtown to downtown services. Driving would take longer than the express (X2000) trains. Look at RailEurope, or http://www.sj.se and click on the English link in the upper right corner. It was hard to enter some destinations on the SJ site because I don't have the right Swedish letters, but you can cut and paste off their route map.
Planes are faster (1.25 hours Copenhagen to Stockholm instead of 5.25 hours) but you have to get to and from the airports, although they all have train/light rail connections, and security. If you investigate this be sure prices you compare include taxes. SAS was listing a $68 fare Copenhagen to Stockholm, but the taxes were $105!
The Gota Canal boat would be wonderful, but it's 4 days.
Enjoy the trip. You'll have a great time.
