The irony is... Posted by MI-Roger [Email] (#882) [Profile/Gallery] (more from MI-Roger) on Thu, 25 Feb 2010 04:31:36 In Reply to: No more hummer...deal fell through..., cryptical, Wed, 24 Feb 2010 13:01:00 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I always find irony in the visceral hatred espoused by so many people towards the Hummer brand. Ignoring the H1 which was a "civilized" version of a military vehicle, the H2 and H3 are simply pick-up trucks with boxy bodies! Although some people state no desire to ever own a pick-up I have never heard the same level of contempt toward pick-ups as expressed toward Hummers.
I rode in an H1 one time with one of GM's vehicle development engineers driving. He had just completed a trip driving the vehicle from Denver CO, where the vehicle was tested off-road at high elevations, to the Detroit area. The first thing he handed me as I climbed into the Cab was a pair of ear plugs and the warning of "Trust me, you will need these."
Personally, the only Hummer which had possible appeal to me was the H3T. The usefulness of a pick-up bed, an exterior very different from other mid-sized trucks, usable cabin space, reasonable exterior size, and available fuel efficient engines (although not as fuel efficient as I would like!). Even with that I don't think I would have ever purchased one.
The H2 was built on a Chevy Silverado frame which had its "ears" cut off so that the frame ended shortly after the axle locations, and the H2 used a nearly identical drivetrain as the Silverado. The H3 was built at the same factory in Louisianna which assembles the Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon pickups as it shared their frame and powertrain options.
