Not to contradict someonw else, but DO NOT ADD ACID to WATER. This procedure is highly chemically reactive - ie explosive ! When you top off the fluid level of a battery, you add water to the acidic solution, but NEVER the other way around. Unless you have proper safety equipment and other precautions previously in place. It is not recommended to take a spilled battery and try to add the acidic solution because the battery most likely has water remaining in the chambers and this is a chemically reactive situation. Severe chemical burns are very possible !
When you purchase a brand new battery and it needs to be initially filled, the acid is installed first, followed by the water. Very important to follow the directions very carefully.
