Proper tools RULE. I've been fortunate enough to have had 1/2"-drive sockets from the very beginning.
I've been doing Larry West's method - breaker bar then speed-handle. I have an electric impact but that really hammers the lug nuts especially the chrome-plated ones on the Hondas & the 9.2x.
And I agree about shops. My wife thinks I'm crazy to check after the car comes back from a shop.
