The first time I tried to loosen my lugs after having winter tires mounted, I twisted the end off a cheapo 3/8"-drive extension from Harbor Freight (it was clearly made of soft steel). After re-equipping with Craftsman sockets and a breaker bar, I then broke the same 1/2"-to-3/8" adapter you did! At least I could tell by the way the adapter broke that it was made from a reasonably hard (brittle) steel.
I made the same decision to buy a dedicated 1/2"-drive 17mm socket, although mine is standard depth because my breaker bar pivots enough. I still needed an 18" cheater pipe on the end of the breaker bar to initially loosen the lugs though!
My method for driving the lugs is just to straighten out my breaker bar along the axis and use both hands alternately to spin it like a screwdriver. I almost want to add a rubber grip so I can do this quickly without slipping.
