1. I'd suggest that it's the maps that isn't that precise. Though if you're using CNUS 2010 or such (I mean smth not too old), then it may be worth resetting it to factory defaults (refer to your user guide, usually you're to turn it on hold your finger at the right top screen corner) and re-freshing its sat almanac: set it on under clear sky until it says that it's good to go further. Or contact GRMN support for instructions on almanac reset procedure.
2. Nuvi GPS units do not measure the altitude that precise as professional or semi-pro GPS equipment. You can be standing still and it'll tell you that you're at 1000 att. Wait for a couple of minutes and you'll be at 1100 and ten minutes later you can be told that you're at 800 - it all will be happening even if you're standing still and not moving at all.
