Lighter weight, better cooling, and used to be short lived. Most modern alu. engines use a spray on metal or ceramic coating in the cylinders for longer life.
Some older engines used steel or cast iron cyl. liners.
There is some advantage to both being the same material for gasket life, but they all fail sooner or later it seems.
This is of course just my opinion, no engineer here, just a 40+ year mechanic.
