Car manufacturers can save some significant weight by making various car parts out of aluminum vs. iron or steel.
The aluminum used in cars are alloys, combinations of aluminum with other materials that are used to enhance various desired performance properties. For engine blocks, some manufacturers have been successful making blocks out of a silicon-aluminum alloy, notably Mercedes-Benz, while others have been far less successful, i.e. the Chevy Vega. We had an early Vega (had to check the gas every time we filled up the oil!), with an aluminum block and cast iron head (totally backwards!); in later years they lined the cylinder bores with iron sleeves for longevity.
