The weight advantage can actually be very significant, often hundreds of pounds for a big engine. You'll see engine swaps where someone puts in an aluminum Chevy LS1 V8 and it weighs less the the all-iron four or six cylinder it's replacing. Early iron-block/aluminum-head engines did have shorter head gasket life for the reason you mention. I'm not sure how this was resolved (different gasket material or design?) but it doesn't seem to be problem these days.
